Describe why you enjoy math: Although I don’t actually enjoy math in itself, I like the feeling of self-confidence that comes from overcoming the challenges of hard subjects like geometry, advanced math, and calculus.
Describe how you anticipate using math in your future: In the future, I anticipate using math in my career. I’m interested in becoming an artist, and I would use math skills when dealing with proportions within a painting, when framing a picture, and when marketing my artwork.
I have been involved in my community through the following service projects: I am a volunteer at the Joslyn Art Museum through a program called “Jambassadors,” for high school students. Through the program, I have assisted with children’s activities, such as printmaking and cardboard sculpture, and with putting up student artwork at the museum. Also, during the fall of 2009, I volunteered in the costume department at Creighton University by helping to sew costumes for their production of The Nutcracker. I have also been a counselor and resource volunteer at Camp Fun-N-Faith, a Catholic summer camp for girls.
My favorite project was: helping out at Camp Fun-N-Faith. The staff there were very friendly, which made me feel welcomed and also made me eager to help with whatever they needed--working in the office, running a craft for the girls, preparing food, folding laundry, or doing dishes.
I have set the following goals for myself for the future:
• 1 year: During the next year, I plan on improving my writing skills. In addition to writing school papers, I would like to find time to write short stories.
• 5 years: Within the next five years, I want to accomplish an art major at college and prepare myself for an art-related career. I would like to pursue writing and illustrating books for children.
My mother has inspired me to consider: pursuing the study of Latin. Although I am more interested in art, I have taken Latin since grade school. I attended the National Junior Classical League Convention during the summer of 2009, and won several awards. My mother says that I should keep taking Latin so that I could teach it—maybe as a homeschool tutor--as a way to use the talents that God has given me.
My favorite subject in school is: art, especially painting and drawing, which I have been doing since I was little. I have taken adult watercolor classes at the Joslyn Art Museum for the past three years, and I also took an Art Fundamentals class at Creighton University during the spring of 2010.
My favorite extra-curricular activity has been: performing in Shakespeare plays at the Omaha Homeschool Learning Center. Each year, during the spring semester, the Learning Center offers a Shakespeare class, which culminates in two performances of a Shakespeare play. Last year, I played the part of the Regent (or Prince) in Romeo and Juliet: A Looney Tunes Tragedy, and this year, I played Peter Quince in A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Boys vs. Girls.
The most challenging thing I have ever experienced is: being pushed out of my comfort zone. I’m a naturally shy person, usually hesitant to try new things; but my mother makes me do certain activities anyway--for example, classes in Latin and art at Creighton University.
My greatest accomplishment to date has been: winning the “Best of Show” award in Creighton University’s 12th Annual Student Art Exhibit, in April 2010, with a charcoal portrait entitled “Sarah at the Beach.” During the spring semester, I took an Art Fundamentals class at the university through their “Next Step” program for high school juniors and seniors. The charcoal portrait was one of the required projects. I didn’t really want to enter the exhibit, but my mother insisted--and I’m glad she did!
