Describe why you enjoy math:
It is like a puzzle. Algebra is particularly entertaining because a lot of it is “plug and chug”. Once you solve certain steps, the rest just falls into place. It is satisfying to have the right answer in the end after problems involving a lot of substitution.
Describe how you anticipate using math in your future (job, hobbies, community service work, mentoring, research):
I’ve looked into a possible accounting major so that one is pretty self-explanatory. I’ve also looked into sociology. Math will be helpful in figuring out averages and normal distributions.
I have been involved in my community through the following service projects: Help run a mission trip for middle schoolers; went to Chicago, Los Angeles, and Boston with my church choir- mission during the day and choir performances at night; Habitat for Humanity, Food Bank; CARITAS
My favorite project was the Food Bank for the following reason:
It is amazing to see how much work and organization goes into the Food Bank. Donations come in by the case and it is primarily up to volunteers to sort the foods. Also, it is amazing to see how much people give even during the rough economic times. This has been one of the most prosperous years for the local Food Bank.
I have set the following goals for myself for the next:
· 1 year: Going to college
· 5 years: I want to have an undergraduate degree finished; I don’t know if I will be going to graduate school because that all depends on what I decide to major in. I’m excited for the next chapter in my life. My parents have inspired me to consider: what I really want to do and be. Not necessarily what others want me
to be.
My favorite subject in school is, or has been Math.
I enjoy the challenge. I also find it a stress reliever. I find myself doing algebra because I enjoy doing problems with substitution. To me, it is like a game; you are given clues but it is your responsibility to decipher them.
My favorite extra-curricular activity is, or has been helping others.
I am always at church helping with crafts, Vacation Bible School, meal prep, pre-schoolers. I enjoy giving my time to others who need it more.
The most challenging thing I have ever experienced is putting my future in other people’s hands.
The fact that I can’t be positive that I will get into a certain school is very hard. I am the type of person who likes “black and white” and the unknowns of the senior year are frightening.
My greatest accomplishment to date has been getting into college.
I have been accepted into Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah. This is a great relief considering it is only the first month of my senior year. |
